Google Storage: Coming Together to Implement Enterprise Changes

In November 2021, Google announced changes to its enterprise storage licenses for education, limiting the amount of data that could be stored in their free education tenets. This change in licensing and policy caused a significant impact on education institutions, including the University of Kentucky. Immediately, UK Information Technology Services (UK ITS) knew there would be a lot of work to do in order to get the overall University’s Google storage utilization below the 150TB maximum capacity set by Google.

Microsoft Releases May 2023 Security Updates

Microsoft has released updates to address multiple vulnerabilities in Microsoft software. An attacker can exploit some of these vulnerabilities to take control of an affected system.

Mozilla Releases Security Advisories for Multiple Products

Mozilla has released security advisories to address vulnerabilities in Firefox and Firefox ESR. A cyber threat actor could exploit some of these vulnerabilities to take control of an affected system.  CISA encourages users and administrators to review the following advisories and apply the necessary updates:

Free Splunk Training Available for Students, faculty, and IT professionals Interested in Cybersecurity

The University of Kentucky has become an approved partner with Splunk, a security information and event management (SIEM) platform, to offer free training to students, faculty, and IT professionals. Course topics offered include how to use the Splunk platform and develop skills that are often sought after in careers in cybersecurity.

Students and friends celebrate filmmaking at 2023 Student Film Festival

The University of Kentucky Student Organizations and Activities partnered with UK Smart Campus and Courage Media to present the UK Student Film Festival on April 28, a showcase of short films created by and starring UK students from different colleges.

Media Depot Assists Students in Human Health Sciences Class

"Each group was encouraged to use the Media Depot, an on-campus resource for technology, software and video equipment support. This allowed students to show a different side of themselves — something their professors and peers normally don’t see."

KHSAA State Esports Spring championships off to strong start at UK

Gamers from all over the Commonwealth came to the University of Kentucky to show off their skills in an activity that’s been on an upward trend. The Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) Spring Esports Championships were held on Wednesday. Celebration and cheers rang through the Esports lounge as the students celebrated gaming. New Dependents Feature in myUK App

Beginning April 26, the myUK mobile app will include an enhanced feature allowing employees to manage their benefit plan dependent information from the convenience of their smartphone or tablet. Employees will be able to edit or add dependents for benefits coverage using myUK mobile for any-time benefit changes or during open enrollment. Using the mobile dependent enrollment tool via the myUK mobile app is optional, as the myUK web version of Employee Self Service has not been changed and will still be available for dependent enrollment.

Botaka Speaks to Carter G. Woodson Academy

Student Media Depot employee, Moses Botaka, was asked to speak to at STEM night at Carter G. Woodson Academy on April 13.  Moses tabled at their STEM Night event to talk about media, show off some equipment and talk about working at the Media Depot. Moses demonstrated a Canon R6 camera on a DJI Gimbal for the students, showing how you can connect the gimbal to a phone to control it. Moses gave away swag from The Cornerstone and Student Media Depot.
