ITS Recognizes Employee Years of Service, Announces Customer Excellence Awards

University of Kentucky Information Technology Services has recognized 40 employees who celebrated milestone years of service during the year 2020. These 40 employees, ranging from seven different ITS divisions, combined for a total of 635 years of service at UK. ITS also recognized student, faculty, and staff recipients of their Customer Excellence in Leadership in IT Advancement Award. These award winners were recognized for their leadership in technology and their commitment to furthering IT advancement at the university.

UK cybersecurity director says protection must be priority to prevent future attacks

The Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack disrupted life for millions of Americans in early May and caused those watching from a distance to wonder if they too could be affected by a similar hack. Former Marine and University of Kentucky Director of Cybersecurity George Insko said a hack that large could "absolutely" happen anywhere. "What's worse is that we've known about the types of attacks for quite some time; we haven't been doing a whole lot about it," explained Insko. "And, although a pipeline is bad, we're lucky that it didn't explode and kill somebody."

Technology to Meet Community Needs: Vaccine Sign Up and Scheduling

As the University of Kentucky stepped up to meet the challenge of distributing COVID-19 vaccines to the Lexington community, it needed a more sophisticated tool for vaccine sign ups. Information Technology Services (ITS) worked with UK HealthCare to develop a process that would provide the community with an easy way to request a vaccine appointment and then schedule the date and time for their vaccination once the vaccine was available for them.  

UK to Present at 2021 Association for Institutional Research (AIR) Forum Virtual Event

The University of Kentucky made the decision to implement a test-optional policy for admissions to accommodate those students that may have challenges completing standardized tests due to COVID-19. This policy required alternative data to be considered for a variety of decision points including admissions, academic readiness, prerequisite determination, institutional aid, and more. Using criteria like high school GPA, a new model needed to be created for the student admissions process.

The University of Kentucky has been selected as a final nominee for Excellence in Institution Success in Salesforce.org’s Summit Awards. The Summit Awards are given out annually to recognize schools, colleges, universities and departments that innovate for the better through their use of Salesforce constituent journeys.  

Higher Education Gets a Crash Course in Online Event Planning

he University of Kentucky’s 2020-21 events calendar is filled like any typical school year’s: The 42nd Annual Kentucky Women Writers Conference welcomed attendees from around the nation. The UK Alumni Association celebrated homecoming. And to commemorate Black History Month, the Martin Luther King Center held its second annual Men of Color Symposium. There was one difference, but it was a major one: All of these events were held online.

The tournament will provide the opportunity for players to participate in a distinctive NBA 2K basketball experience on twitch.tv/universityofky, connecting and unifying the community. Those wishing to participate must register by Tuesday, April 6, 2021.

ITS Enhances Cybersecurity by Implementing 2nd Phase of Automatic Account Deprovisioning

University of Kentucky Information Technology Services (ITS) would like to inform all students, faculty and staff about the next phase in the Identity Management (IdM) Account Deprovisioning process. Starting April 14, ITS will turn on automatic account deprovisioning for students who are no longer enrolled at the University of Kentucky (e.g., graduated, transferred).
