This summer, ITS was able to participate in UK Human Resources’ 2021 Summer Youth Program. The Summer Youth Program, in its 19th year at UK, hosts ten diverse and/or disadvantaged high school students who spend six weeks on campus observing, learning and actively participating in meaningful assignments across the University. ITS received a placement with incoming freshman Helen Yang. Yang recently graduated from Lafayette High School and plans to be a Computer Science major in the fall at UK. She was hosted by the Strategic Engagement & Planning team while being introduced to all the other ITS teams.

As part of the internship, Yang was able to learn about all different aspects of ITS through interviews with every member of the Leadership team. The interviews were a personal way to show her all of the different career options and paths that ITS has to offer. She additionally shadowed other ITS teams including Cybersecurity, IRADS, and Research Computing Infrastructure.

In addition to the interviews, Yang was also taken on tours of ITS facilities including the Student Media Depot and Data Centers in order for her to see how we function and work behind the scenes.

The six-week program began June 14 and ended July 16 with a luncheon and presentation where Yang shared all that she learned. ITS was happy to be a host this year in the Summer Youth program and wishes Helen the best of luck in her future at UK.
