UK HealthCare Earns Epic Gold Stars Level 10 -- Again!

UK HealthCare achieved the prestigious Epic Gold Star Level 10 in 2024, marking the second time since the Epic implementation in 2021. This recognition places UK HealthCare among the top 9% of healthcare organizations worldwide on the Epic platform. The Epic Gold Stars program evaluates an organization’s feature configuration and adoption of best practices to enhance quality, safety, and effective use of the electronic health record. This achievement reflects UK HealthCare's commitment to providing the best patient care through advanced technology and efficient workflows. The recognition was celebrated during the Epic Executive Address at the annual User Group Meeting in August 2024.

UK Information Technology Services Bill Adams Featured in Apple Video 

Apple Higher Education released a video featuring UK Information Technology Services (UK ITS) Field Services Associate Director Bill Adams. The video highlights Adams’ work in collaboration with the Smart Campus team, which found that iPads are much more cost-effective for students compared to PC tablets. WATCH HERE

UK ITS Chief Information Security Officer Stephen Burr quoted in Internet2 article

UK ITS Associate CIO and Enterprise CISO of Cybersecurity Stephen Burr was recently quoted in an article by Internet2, a nonprofit that offers cloud solutions and technology services. Burr reviewed the NET+ 1Password service, which securely stores passwords, software licenses and additional information at an enterprise level. READ MORE

Rob Sprang, Tim Worley, and Brian Davis are Featured in a Story of Friendship and Heroics

Rob Sprang, Telemedicine Project Director in Enterprise Applications & Outreach shared his story of cardiac issues while golfing. Tim Worley, Director of Enterprise Telephony with Enterprise Networking & Infrastructure, and Brian Davis, External Development Manager with Enterprise Applications & Outreach, were with him as well and quickly lept to action. Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers

UK ITS Director of Privacy and Governance, Risk & Compliance Michael P. Sheron spoke at the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Conference about understanding FERPA and data protection. He emphasized the importance of Access Rights — a requirement that only allows the ‘eligible student' to access their personal information regardless of age. READ MORE

Epic User Group Meeting (UGM) 2024

"The Very Hungry Nurse Manager: A Phased Approach to Thrive Training" by Gillian Puscas (IT Training Director) and Jessica Collins (Chief Nursing Information Officer). This presentation showcased a training method that led to a 75% increase in efficiency dashboard views and a 4% rise in best practice advisories

"Getting to Happily Ever After: Effective Prioritization Strategy Implementation" by Roshan Hussain (Chief Data Officer), Jennifer Rose (Senior Associate Vice President for Chandler Expansion & Performance Improvement), and Chris Burton (Business Intelligence Director). This presentation highlighted a strategy that boosted on-time project completion from 50% to over 93% and reduced ticket backlogs by six-fold.

EDUCAUSE Leadership Series

Stephen Burr was a panelist for the session "Creating a Sustainable Higher Education Information Security Program". This session focused on building and maturing information security programs to navigate constant change and evolving threats in higher education.

EDUCAUSE Annual Conference

Assistant Director of Strategic Communications and Engagement Marci Adams and Project Manager, Cybersecurity Paul London hosted a poster session during the conference that explained how UK ITS’s Community of Practice group can serve as a model for decentralized IT departments at colleges and universities. It was the first time Adams and London presented during EDUCAUSE.

Peggy Akridge, IT Vendor Management, presented a poster and hosted a Braindate session to further discuss negotiations with vendors. Akridge, and colleague Emily Perry from University of Arizona, hosted the sessions. READ MORE

Enterprise Cybersecurity Presents to KWLEN

The Enterprise Cybersecurity team had the opportunity to engage with the Kentucky Women's Law Enforcement Network (KWLEN) on Thursday, July 18. The presentation, with attendees from across the state both in person and on Zoom, aimed to shed light on the team's roles and responsibilities, cybersecurity threats, risks and provided overall guidance and tips. The speakers for the event included Taha Al-jumaily, Jennifer Edwards, Michael Sheron, and student employee Jacob Alteri. KWLEN is an organization committed to fostering mentorship and professional growth for women in the field of law enforcement.

CHIME Fall Forum

Roshan Hussain, former Chief Data Officer leading the Performance Analytics Center of Excellence (PACE) team, presented at the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME) Fall Forum in San Diego on November 6. Roshan's session entitled "Modernized EDW: On-Prem to Cloud Enablement of Enterprise Analytics" discussed UKHC's migration journey from a legacy, on-prem data warehouse to an Azure Databricks lakehouse.

SC24  

Members of the Research Computing Infrastructure (RCI) team attended SC24 (Supercomputing 2024). Over 18,500 attendees attended this year’s event in Atlanta. The conference highlighted advancements in liquid cooling technology to manage high chip power consumption and explored hybrid quantum-classical systems and their integration challenges in a dedicated "Quantum Alley." OpenText World

Marc Bradley, Business Applications Director, spoke about modernizing and advancing the University's IT platforms at a Public Sector Industry Forum for State/Local Government/Education at OpenText World. The event brought together industry leaders, professionals, and experts to explore the latest innovations in information management, including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and more. Attendees had the opportunity to participate in keynote sessions, breakout discussions, hands-on training, and networking events, all designed to help organizations harness the power of their information to drive business transformation.

College Business Management Institute (CBMI)

UK ITS employees made significant contributions at the College Business Management Institute (CBMI). Stephen Burr, ACIO - Enterprise CISO, highlighted current challenges and best practices in cybersecurity. Michael P. Sheron, IT Policy & Data Privacy Analyst, shared his expertise on data privacy and protection, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding sensitive information in academic institutions. Additionally, several ITS employees attended the conference and engaged in various sessions to strengthen their knowledge and bring back innovative solutions to enhance our university's technology landscape.

Kentucky Salesforce Innovations Day
Emily Brenzel and Mary Kathryn Starkey presented with campus partners from Smart Campus, IRADS, and PR/Marketing on the technical infrastructure and marketing efforts surrounding UK Online at the Kentucky Salesforce Innovations Day. Salesforce Kentucky Innovations Day brought together professionals from state and local government agencies and higher education to discuss best practices and exciting new efforts with Salesforce's various platforms.

Other Notable Recognitions

Women's Executive Leadership Development

Marci Adams, Communications & Strategic Engagement, and Rosalynn King, Performance Analytics Center of Excellence (PACE), graduated from the Women's Executive Leadership Development (WELD) program in 2024. The eight-month WELD program aims to develop a new generation of leaders in higher education who can successfully contribute to the future of the university. 

Staff Senate

UK ITS employees were named members of Staff Senate, either starting their terms or continuing to serve. Chris Larmour from Enterprise Systems served as Parliamentarian in 2024. Other senators from UK ITS include Eric Carroll, Joseph Hacker, Scott Pappas, Cory Qualls, Zachary King, and Ben Rice.

College of Education's Outstanding Staff Award

Clinton Knight, ITS Technical Support Specialist III in the College of Education, was awarded the College of Education's Outstanding Staff Award for 2024. He was recognized for his dedication and helpfulness across the college. Congratulations on your award and thank you for your work, Clinton!
