On February 6, Michael P. Sheron spoke at the Southern Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers Conference about understanding FERPA and data protection.

Sheron emphasized the importance of Access Rights — a requirement that only allows the ‘eligible student' to access their personal information regardless of age.

If FERPA is not followed by college administrators, it can result in a loss of federal funds. Sheron also discussed best practices when handling confidential information. A set of rules should be established and followed for safeguarding both digital and paper records. Sheron suggested establishing strong authentication processes for ID verification, taking privacy and awareness training and working with a cybersecurity team to ensure compliance is met.

Overall, Sheron's presentation helped attendees understand the importance of following federal regulations and prioritizing best practices for securing student data.
