Starting Wednesday, February 2, any customer using third-party email applications (e.g., older versions of Apple Mail, Thunderbird) with Basic Authentication protocols will experience issues accessing their UK Microsoft 365 email account. This change is due to Information Technology Services (ITS) ending support for email applications using Basic Authentication protocols for UK Microsoft 365 email accounts in order to provide further enhancements to our cybersecurity posture at UK.

ITS strongly recommends Microsoft Outlook for accessing UK email accounts to ensure no disruption of service. Please see the below articles from the Tech Help Center for assistance on how to set up your UK email account with Microsoft Outlook (web or desktop application).

Note that the following email applications may no longer work for Microsoft 365 email accounts after February 2:

  • Apple Mail (older versions)
  • Thunderbird
  • Any application using Simple Mail Transport Protocol (SMTP), Post Office Protocol (POP), and Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) legacy email protocols

See Support for Basic Authentication Ending For UK Email Accounts for more information on what applications and versions will no longer be supported. At this time, there are no changes being made to UK Gmail accounts (@g.uky.edu).
