Service Area: Wireless Network Operations
What services do you and your teammates provide to campus?
Our team services over 7,500 Wi-Fi access points across campus and UK Healthcare. We also design the wireless network and are responsible for the preparation and deployment of the Wi-Fi access points. After installation, the team monitors and maintains the Wi-Fi access points and responds to any wireless trouble tickets issued from campus or UK Healthcare.
What campus units do you collaborate with?
We collaborate with technology representatives in various colleges and departments in the design and implementation of the new wireless access points. When issues occur we work with either the college or department representative and/or customers. Recently we have worked with the renovation of the UK Student Center and collaborated with architects, contractors, vendors and individuals on the Capital Project Committee. There are over 400 Wi-Fi access points in the new building. The original design was submitted about two years ago and there will be continual refinements of the design until the building is occupied which is typical with large buildings.
What are your workplace values?
Trust is vital for teams so the team can depend upon each other to get the job done. I read a Google article that stated 10 years of research found happiness and productivity in the workplace is based on trust and friendships among co-workers. I totally agree with this and try to have lunch with my team members a few times a week.
What is your favorite part of working in ITS and UK?
I’m nerdy and the people I work with are nerdy so I can be myself and it fits me well. After working in Microbiology for several years, I realized I was missing something and it was passion for my job. After earning a Computer Science degree and interning here, I found my passion and how I could make a difference.
