ITS Division: Research Computing Infrastructure

Service Area: Research Computing

What services do you and your teammates provide to campus?

We work on UK’s High-Performance Computing (HPC) systems, commonly referred to as supercomputers. The nature of research computing has changed and fragmented, and we provide on-premise cloud compute and storage resources. I’m mainly concentrated on the build-out of the systems with extra emphasis on the network side. I also design, implement and maintain the networking infrastructure for all of our computing services. We use a system called OpenStack to provide virtual machines (VMs) to researchers and students, as well as another technology called Ceph, which is a large distributed file system, to provide high-speed access to large datasets. Research is fluid and it’s ever-changing. We’re kind of the wild west—things change on a whim based on where research takes us.

What campus units do you collaborate with?

We work with anyone on campus who needs computing resources to complete their research. I build the systems, the software goes on the systems, and many parts of campus utilize the software. We also do a lot of projects and grant with the Center for Computational Science, such as the CC:DNI grant.

What are your workplace values?

I borrow them from the Navy: Honor, Courage, and Commitment.

What is your favorite part of working in ITS and UK?

ITS has given me an opportunity to work in so many different areas. Networking is complex and I’ve been able to learn and experiment with different technologies. In the Research Computing group, I hope to develop this knowledge to the limits and beyond.
