Mike Mattone
ITS Division: Networking & Infrastructure
Service Area: Network Operations
What services do you and your teammates provide to campus?
The Networking & Infrastructure division is responsible for maintaining the UK Campus and HealthCare wireless infrastructures, which include almost 8,500 access points. We prepare the network and access points for deployments and upgrades, assist with installations, and monitor wireless activity – working to avoid outages and eliminate obstructions to the smooth flow of communication. We assist users with connecting wireless devices and help customers with any technical needs. Like the rest of ITS, we constantly look for ways to improve the stability, speed, and security of communications between users and network resources.
What campus units do you collaborate with?
Since information travels through a wide range of network resources on campus, my team works closely with other network teams on a daily basis. We have many opportunities to work with IT departments outside of ITS that are looking to facilitate and improve network communications in locations and situations where wired connections may not be economically feasible.
What are your workplace values?
I work very hard to balance accuracy and thoroughness with speed. I am very grateful to everyone in ITS for their willingness to share information, knowledge, and experience that help make this equilibrium possible.
What is your favorite part of working in ITS and UK?
Two of the activities I enjoy most are numerical analysis and working on puzzles. Troubleshooting network problems oftentimes involve the same investigative processes that I enjoy exercising in my free time.
