University-wide Navigation

At the University of Kentucky, artificial intelligence (AI) tools are transforming everything from health care delivery to everyday applications used by students, faculty and staff.

From enhancing cybersecurity detection to assisting clinicians with medical notetaking, AI capabilities continue to evolve. UK HealthCare doctors have reported that using Dragon Copilot has helped them spend more time talking with patients.

As AI integration becomes more prevalent within everyday applications, it’s important to prioritize data privacy when using AI at the University of Kentucky.

UK Information Technology Services (ITS) wants students, faculty and staff to use AI responsibly in ways that protect university data, personal information and our shared digital environment.

By understanding which tools to use, the UK community can help protect university data.

AI safety

Once you share information with an AI tool, you cannot undo this action.

When using any AI tool, be cognizant of the information you share and remember the following:

  • Never share sensitive information. Passwords, banking details, Social Security numbers and data protected by HIPAA or FERPA should never be entered into an AI system. Read more: Here’s why you should never share your personal information chatbots.
  • Pay attention to privacy settings. Some tools allow you to opt out of having your data used for training—others do not.
  • Double‑check accuracy. AI can be helpful, but it can also be inaccurate or wrong. Be sure to verify information by using additional sources.

These best practices help protect both your personal data and UK’s institutional data.

How to Request Microsoft 365 Copilot

UK ITS recommends Microsoft 365 Copilot for use at UK. Copilot is available through UK’s enterprise agreement with Microsoft and meets the university’s cybersecurity and data privacy standards.

Step-by-step instructions for requesting a copilot license can be found on the Tech Help website here: Public - How do I request a Microsoft Copilot license?

Unlike many public AI tools, Copilot does not use UK data to train public models, providing an added layer of protection for users and the institution. Keep in mind that AI policy use varies in academic settings. It’s important to follow class policies related to the use of AI.

Copilot is also integrated directly into Microsoft 365 apps you already use — such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams — allowing you to use AI assistance without switching platforms.
