Key Projects and Initiatives UK ITS Year in Review
New chiller helps keep data center cool
To help super computers and equipment in the McVey Hall Data Center run smoothly, the building needs a sufficient cooling system. The chiller supplies cooling for stand-alone cooling units and a high-density in-row cooling system. In fall 2023, the data center’s chiller failed. Installing a new unit was more cost effective than fixing the broken one, but initially, a new chiller unit couldn’t be installed until summer. In the meantime, the cooling systems used chilled water as a temporary cooling solution. Butch Adkins, Infrastructure Operations Manager with UK ITS, said having redundant cooling systems keeps the server hardware from overheating if one of the air conditioners fails. However, a chiller became available sooner than expected, thanks to the Campus Physical Plant Division which found a replacement.
